Murdoch Children’s Research Institute is the largest child health research institute in Australia and a world leader in research quality and impact. The Institute incorporates more than 1200 researchers and numerous support staff who contribute to the betterment of the lives of children across the world. As a collaborative research centre with connections with both the Melbourne Royal Children’s Hospital and the University of Melbourne, the institute has connections with researchers, academics and scientists across the globe.

Hammond Taylor provided MCRI with a suite of services focused on corporate compliance and immigration governance. To assist MCRI to achieve full compliance we assisted the Institute with the development of an immigration policy consistent with its values and goals, reviewed the organisation’s internal HR policies to ensure compliance with immigration laws, and provided training to HR and recruitment staff on business sponsorship, visa management and audit.

About MCRI

MCRI was founded in 1986 by pediatrician Professor David Danks with the generosity and support of Dame Elisabeth Murdoch. MCRI research improves the lives of millions of kids each year. The Institute researches health conditions including diabetes, allergies, asthma, premature birth and mental health problems, which are on the rise in our children, and conditions including cancer and genetic disorders that remain unsolved. MCRI researchers work across five key areas: Infection and Immunity, Cell biology, Clinical Sciences, Genetics, and Population Health.

The challenges

With its high level of global collaboration and partnership, MCRI manages visas for a substantial number of employees and visitors. This makes for a challenging and complex immigration compliance environment.

Hammond Taylor worked with MCRI stakeholders to identify and improve key organisational policies to ensure the organisation was in a position to meet all immigration law obligations and train human resources and recruitment staff to understand and manage immigration requirements.

How we helped

MCRI had high quality existing policies which we reviewed to ensure compliance with immigration laws. In addition, we worked with the Institute to develop an effective immigration policy covering all aspects of the organisation’s immigration management including onboarding, employment and offboarding. In conjunction with these efforts, Hammond Taylor reviewed employment contracts, existing templates and documents used in the immigration process to ensure they met legal and policy requirements.

Hammond Taylor developed and delivered customised face to face training for the human resources and recruitment teams to ensure all key stakeholders understood the fundamentals of the employer sponsored visa system, how to ensure organisational obligations were met, and how the organisation could conduct audits on its visa holder population to verify compliance with legal requirements.

The results

Hammond Taylor provided MCRI with up to date and relevant immigration legal training, assistance and support to meet all relevant immigration law obligations. The organisation has implemented these tools to ensure compliance and mitigate against the risk of any breach. By developing a custom immigration policy and updating other relevant HR policies to be consistent, the organisation has placed itself as a front runner in not just complying with the law but becoming a sector leader in its management of immigration requirements.

Conclusion

Our experience with all aspects of Australian immigration law and policy means we have the necessary tools to provide relevant and targeted training, policy review and development support, as well as audit and monitoring assistance.
